Nepal produces around 500 metric tons of coffee per year, a fraction of global output. Of that, only about 89 tons are exported annually while domestic demand already outstrips local supply. Every cherry is hand-picked on steep Himalayan slopes at 1,200–1,800m altitude with no mechanisation. The combination of genuinely scarce supply, high labour costs and rising international demand from specialty buyers in Europe, Japan and the US keeps prices at a premium. Nepalese Arabica sells at roughly $16/kg internationally, two to three times the price of commodity imports.
